A little while back we decided to make ourselves some debatably legitimate student IDs. They're still not finished because Wordstock typically prevents us from doing anything that isn't red or helvetica or a giant sandwich. Thor and Mike did find the time to snap some photos of us while we were getting blown in the face by what is apparently called an "air bazooka."

For reasons that have only been vaguely alluded to as yet, this year's 12 started a few months later than usual, and as a result 12.6 has spent the first 2 months working entirely on Wordstock. We were given the brief exactly 3 days after we started school, with around 75 days till the actual event.

In a little over two months, we crammed a lot of learning into a short period of time, a lot of ideas into a lot of presentation decks, a lot of food puns onto buttons, a lot of it into wordholes. And hopefully in the end, we will succeed in cramming a lot of literary omnivores into the Oregon Convention Center.

In between moments, in the"interstitial spaces," we've managed to have some laughs, make some stuff, and get taped saying a lot of stupid crap. Here's a quick sampling:

Keep Calm and Bake Goods

If there is anything we hate more than giant parodies of the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster, it's people calling us ungrateful. We here at WK12 are thankful every day for the experience of being at W+K and we try our best to take advantage of everything this place has to offer.

To show our gratitude to the people who email us when there's free food in the building, share wisdom on how to navigate the WK corridors, teach us about the wide world of print production, spell and fact check our Wordstock buttons, and put up with all our stores of food crowding the SW fridge, we've taken to making Thank-You-Pies. Our own 11/12 Casey Hall is pretty handy with a food processor and can whip up homemade pie crust using only butter, flour, and whatever doesn't have a name on it from the 6th floor fridge. (We hear this skill will come in handy sometime in December.)

So if you'd like one of these WK12 Specialty Pies, all you have to do is offer to speak to us and tell us some fun stories about your experiences at WK. You can even make stuff up, we won't know the difference. And if you're in line for pie, please let us know if there are dietary/allergy concerns, and know that your pie will be on the way, just as soon as someone abandons some heavy whipping cream somewhere.

What seems like forever ago, predating our adventures with the Hung Far Low sign or our Meetings Against Meetings, we each in turn stood in the atrium and introduced ourselves to Wieden + Kennedy and said inane things about ourselves. Then we played this little video of ourselves to premiere our new TV show.

After all that opening up and looking stupid in public, we felt like we needed to regroup and regain our dignity. So we donned a bunch of viking helmets and gorged ourselves on a Norwegian feast prepared by Thor's mom. We got totally wasted on Viking booze, and then ran around the agency naked (except for the hats) and pillaged the shit out of everyone.

Not really, but we talked about it. Same thing, right?

Big Trouble in Little Chinatown

The Hung Far Low sign, Portland's biggest dick joke and an undeniable part of the city's history. Someone, somewhere, figured it was too weather-worn to survive another winter, so at great expense, it was taken down. Everyone, then, everywhere, decided that we loved that sign, and needed it put back, fully restored, alight, a neon beacon for those of us stumbling back from bars and strip clubs.

Thus, the Old Town Block Party. Some of Old Town and Chinatown's most innovative and relevant businesses crammed their beer, food, art and retail into one city block in the shadow of Big Pink.

12 was there at John Jay's request, hauling our fourteen foot Ames room photobooth. If you don't know what an Ames room is, this should explain everything: http://virtualreality.physiol.ox.ac.uk/AMESROOM/ames_fig3.png

Basically, we did 12 does best. We put people into an unfamiliar situation, then we waited to see what would happen. We waited for a scene to take place, we waited for a story to develop, we captured it all. We raised about $275 to put towards the re-erection of that lovely sign. And, we had fun.

Meetings Schmeetings

Last Friday, between coughing paroxysms, naps, cocktails and methamphetamines, I heard a few 12ers complain they were not invited to a meeting.

Boo-fucking-hoo.

They should have gotten on their knees and thanked the Lord above, assuming for a moment such a divine being exists.

Dear God,
Thank you for the food we eat.
Thank you for the world so sweet.
Thank you for the birds that sing.
Thank you God for everything, especially for getting me out of that goddamned meeting.

(While they were down on those knees, they should've also thanked the aforementioned Lord for not making them Byron Oshiro, but that's a different subject.)

Fuck meetings!

Canadian fiction writer and cultural commentator Douglas Coupland had this to say about meetings:

Here's my theory about meetings and life; the three things you can't fake are erections, competence and creativity. That's why meetings become toxic they put uncreative people in a situation in which they have to be something they can never be. And the more effort they put into concealing their inabilities, the more toxic the meeting becomes. One of the most common creativity-faking tactics is when someone puts their hands in prayer position and conceals their mouth while they nod at you and say, 'Mmmmmm. Interesting.' If pressed, they'll add, 'I'll have to get back to you on that.' Then they don't say anything else.

In other words, meetings suck.

Yes, they are a necessary evil for information.

But, by all means but:

Keep them few and far between.

Keep them brief.

Keep them informative.

And, unless you have some useful information to share, keep your mouth shut.

Meetings are a breeding ground for laziness and cowardness. Nobody ever gets fired for going to too many meetings.

Simones relation to Kim Jong Il

In Simone's privileged upbringing she went to many private schools... it wasn't until the 7th grade she learned the difference between "good touch and "bad touch". For the past year we have known her, she rambles on about going to the same school as Kim Jong Il's son.. or one of his sons. Every time a hilarious reference to the fearless leader is mentioned, Simone tried to work in her relation to the next leader of North Korea... clearly the coolest Korea.

If you can read French or Armenian click on these images and see for yourself that Simone was best friends with Chol Pak, and would share her lunch with him. He only spent one year at this school, he was moved to another school under another name. In this article you will see his only memory of the United States is a little blond girl he called SiSi. Simone still maintains the puffy burn on her bicep is from a fishing accident and not the permanent symbol of her dedication to North Korea and her role as Supreme Emperoress when Chol Pak takes his place as owner of North Korea.

dinner on the redeye was a turkey club and rabbit food. i acted like i mattered and they upgraded me to first class.

made it to the hotel at 8 and slept until 5 pm. after dinner i wandered. mr. sock man sells 4 packs of socks for $10

i wandered into the wrong neighborhood and a cop picked me up in front of this gas shop for trying to buy crack. i showed him my four seasons keycard and he let me go.

The 2008 W+K Pie Off took place today. It was to be held at the Tangiers, but it was last minute, and Danielle Black dropped the ball... so it was held in the Atrium.

There was alot of judging.

Completely ignoring thier fire hazard seating, Dan and Suzy Q anticipate spoiling their 5 day fast for this very occasion.

It was no surprise Byron was on an all girl team. He neglected to tell them he had burned his taste buds off the night before on an extremely hot Ellios cheese pizza.

this weekend 12 went to the oregon coast (ecola beach) for a day in the ~~sun~~ mist.

we only had one blanket, so we had to improvise.

absolutely breathtaking. um...there were also quite a few dead things that had washed up on the shore, but i didn't have the heart to photograph them: a baby dolphin or whale, brown pelican, and seal -- their stench was also breathtaking.

the tide pools here were amazing and filled with all sorts of creatures. i kept sticking my hands in the crannies to try to catch tiny fish and hermit crabs. probably not the best idea.

mike broke out all his fenagling skills and scored some VIP tickets to the faint concert tonight. they're on tour to promote their forthcoming album 'fasciinatiion'. the faint hails from his hometown (omaha), so we had to go and represent 12... plus the faint is awesome.

it was a really rad concert and we were so close, you could feel their sweat.

the show was at the crystal ballroom, famous for its 'floating' mechanical dance floor. the floor is constructed so that it bounces and has give to it as people move across it - supposedly a lot better for dancer knees and ankles and a lot of fun for concerts.

the place was packed and people were throwing everything from bras to pants onstage. pants? kids nowadays.

every year rob's family has a hawaiian-style pig roast in their backyard. they dig a huge hole in the ground, line it with bricks, throw in an entire pig all prepped and wrapped up and cover it with coals to cook for about 20 hours.

mike designed an awesome two-color silkscreen poster for the event and early saturday morning we headed down to screen them and lay them out at work. the image was a stormtrooper with bbq sauce on his mask.

mike showed me how to coat the screens with emulsion and burn them the day before so that they would be dry and ready for printing the next day.

since the emulsion was a little uneven, mike had to tape up the parts that we didn't want ink coming through before printing.

we decided to mix 3 parts bbq sauce to 1 part red & brown ink so that the bbq sauce would actually smell ~~and taste~~ real.

curt and karen came to help us out.

karen and i were on salt and pepper duty. each bbq print was dusted with salt, pepper, and even some red pepper flakes for authenticity. :)

curt put the second color on

the problem with using spices on prints is that they get all over your screen

the first print was a little smushy

the rest of the bunch turned out fantastically.

after setting the prints out to dry, mike & curt cleaned the screens and got ready to do some pig-eating.

PIG ROAST 2000!!!!

we got there at 5, the pig had come out of the ground at 4:30. there was already barely any food left because of all these people.

after a little sleep and a hefty breakfast, Friday afternoon was the time to head over to Scrapper's art opening at his—Grass Hut Gallery

where fierce games of 4-square kept the men separated from the boys...

sometime later, a chance meeting with a major tom looking space man told us to keep the dance alive and so on to the Tube it was!

where Mac danced like it was his bar in his town dammit!

bees, books, n' booze

when WK was attacked by swarms of bees yesterday morning, we thought the apocalypse was coming.

apparently the bees lost their queen and followed her scent to the shrubbery on our rooftop and then smashed themselves against her queenly odour.
a beekeeper was called and came and took most of the bunch away and is going to enslave them to make honey for himself and his beekeeper wife. they say that the bees should produce honey for them in a year.

(for those of you who don't know, there is currently a crazy honey bee shortage, i'm sure he was stoked!)

after weeks of work, 12 finished our first real deck for Wordstock. hurrah! (is this the first time we've posted work on here?)

at 4 o'clock, we all ran up to the roof for michael illick's art show Scott Phillips: A Life. scott is an account dood here and i guess mike's been drawing him for quite a while and eventually made enough sketches to warrant a kickass hoopla of an art show.

introducing will: our shining englishman. we finally got our 13th this past sunday. at long last, 12 is complete.

after 19 years of being the sultry, welcoming voice of wieden + kennedy, gwen, our lovely lady in reception retired and also celebrated her birthday today.

we had a great big party for her in the atrium and on the deck on the 6th floor. david kennedy and dan wieden spoke, and the agency shot a farewell video for her which included a clip of gwen on Oprah looking hot in an animal-print swimsuit at the age of 46! hoo-haw!

we went upstairs to the 6th floor and had a nice party with lots of sun, yummy hummus and falafel, and lebanese margaritas.

12 Goes To The Beach

A few of us went to Cannon Beach this weekend to unwind, have lunch, laugh, find adventure, and get some sun. We were not disappointed.
The water was chilly but we had the warmth of the sun to keep us going.

the elusive Bigfoot was having a solo show at BLVD gallery down the street.
